On this Land and Third Cinema Today
On this Land and Third Cinema Today | screening and talk by Amin Husain
Friday 27 May| 16:30 – 18:00 | Bageion
Currently in its early phase of post-production, On This Land is a feature length film and trans-media work by MTL Collective that takes viewers on a journey to a land frequently invoked yet rarely heard or seen beyond the clichés of mainstream media: Palestine. With an aesthetic mode that reflects a post Arab uprisings climate, the film weaves through a cacophony of landscapes, conversations, and sonic traces of the Occupied Territories. Images build a visual vocabulary to understand the fractured daily reality of Palestinian communities, bearing witness to Palestine as a network of fragmented geographies.
The camera itself is encircled and embedded in open-air prisons, enframed by the boundaries and hierarchies that have been established through checkpoints, barriers, militarization surveillance, and killing. The film is animated with a spectrum of insurgent voices that demonstrate the conditions of brutal oppression next to cultures of militant courage, political invention, and radical love. Scenes from On This Land will be screened to offer a basis of what Third Cinema and its politics can look like today.

*The title of this film comes from a poem by Mahmoud Darwish:
On this Land
There’s on this land
what makes life worth living,
The recurrence of April,
the smell of bread at dawn,
A woman’s amulet for men,
the beginning of love,
Grass on a stone,
mothers standing on the thread of a flute,
and the invaders fear of memories.
There’s on this land what makes life worth living,
The end of September,
A woman leaving ‘forty’ behind
with all of her apricots
The hour of sunlight in prison
A cloud reflecting a swarm of creatures
A people’s applause for those who face their own erasure with a smile
And the tyrant’s fear of songs.
We have on this land what makes life worth living
On this land
The lady of our land
The mother of all beginnings
And the mother of all ends
She was called Palestine
Her name later became Palestine
Because you are my lady
I deserve life.
