Playroom | Sightseers | open workshop
Duration: 17-24 April 2016
During theSynapse 2, Athens Biennale 2015 – 2017 “Οmonoia”, the Playroom team will be inhabiting a room on the 1st floor of the Hotel Bagkeion, launching “Project Room”, an artistic platform for both children and grownups, which through a series of participatory workshops plans to review the issue of exotization of Greece. The notion will be seen as a factor that will shape questions regarding the detached gaze of the observer, along with the process of local communities appropriating the characteristics, the aforementioned gaze attributes to them.
For the “Sightseers” workshop, which will run throughout Athens Biennale 2015 – 2017 “Οmonoia” Synapse 2 – 17 to 24 April, 15:00 to 19:00- in Bagkeion hotel, the “Project Room” guests are to imagine themselves briefly transformed into an exotic animal that arrived in the city of Athens, and navigates it in order to capture whatever they deem remarkable whether that is seen, heard or felt. Having made the tour, each “traveler” is to provide “Project Room” with a photograph and a small (or large) text.
For both the “Sightseers” and “Imagine Xuth I and II,” workshops, the team was inspired by the unfinished satirical novel by James Pitzipios “Monkey Xouth, or the century mores,” which was published serially in the magazine “Warehouse of beneficial and pleasant knowledge” in 1844. It is one of the few modern Greek satirical fantasy novels of that era and it’s bizarre content, generates both queries and smiles. The novel deals with the story of a monkey named Xouth, a character who balances throughout the imaginary narrative between the roles of the monkey / servant and the western-european traveler who found himself in 19th century Greece.
The aim of the workshop is to run until 2017 and for the results to be published at the closing of the Athens Biennale 2015 – 2017 “Οmonoia” Synapse 2, as a travelogue album, created by many travel writers/ participants and unexpected content.
The instructions will be given in Greek and English. There will be the option to participate also for residents or visitors of other parts of Greece via electronic submission of the touring material to “Project Room” site.
