Vasif Kortun at Bageion

Vasıf Kortun, the Director of Research and Programs of SALT, is a curator, writer and lecturer in the field of contemporary visual art, cultural institutions, archives and spatial practices. Before establishing SALT, he was the founding director Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Proje4L, Istanbul Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of the Center for Curatorial Studies in Bard College.
As an internationally renowned curator and a recipient of the Award for Curatorial Excellence from Bard College, Vasıf Kortun participated in many projects, including Taipei Biennial (2008) as the co-curator with ManRay Hsu, 9th International Istanbul Biennial (2005) as the co-curator with Charles Esche, the 3rd International Istanbul Biennial (1992) as the director and chief curator and a co-curator for the 1998 Sao Paolo Biennial. He curated the United Arab Emirates Pavilion (2011) and the Turkish Pavilion for the Venice Biennale (2007). He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Foundation for Arts Initiatives, CIMAM International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art, the Advisory Board of Asia Art Archive, FM Centre for Contemporary Art, Milan, and participated in juries including the Turner Prize, Ars Fennica 2014, Velasquez Prize, Paul Huf Award, Belvedere Contemporary Art Award, Furla Art Prize, Onufru Award and Venice, Gwangju and Periferic Biennials. Vasıf Kortun has written extensively for publications and periodicals internationally, and, in particular, his work has been inestimably important and transformative for the contemporary art scene of Turkey.
