New Partner & Director for the Athens Biennale

Nayia Yiakoumaki joins the Athens Biennale as a new partner at a phase when the ten year-old successful Biennale strengthens its global reach and outlook.

In the key role as Director of Research and International Networks, she will be working closely with founding director Poka-Yio, to help deliver and curate a broad programme of exhibitions and public events whilst working strategically on the internal structure of the Athens Biennale organisation.

Nayia Yiakoumaki said: "I feel privileged to be joining the Athens Biennale whose activity I have followed closely and I look forward to contribute to its future success as a leading international organization for debate and presentation of contemporary art".

Whilst accepting the new role at the Athens Biennale, Nayia Yiakoumaki remains committed to her work at the Whitechapel Gallery.



Short Bio

Nayia Yiakoumaki is a curator and artist with substantial experience in the field. She has lectured extensively in universities in the UK and abroad since 1991 on the subject of Curating and Visual Arts.

Since 2005 she is curator at the Whitechapel Gallery in London where she developed and established an innovative programme of exhibitions related to the use of archives as a curatorial resource. This programme has attracted international attention from professional peers and has been running for almost a decade.

Nayia Yiakoumaki devises NEON Curatorial Exchange & Award, an initiative funded by NEON organization and delivered by the Whitechapel Gallery, which fosters professional relationships for emerging curators.

Nayia Yiakoumaki has conceived a number of successful exhibitions and commissions, including John Latham: Anarchive (2010), This is Tomorrow (2011), Rothko in Britain (2012), Aspen Magazine: 1965-1971 (2012), Black Eyes & Lemonade: Curating Popular Art (2013), Supporting Artists: ACME's first decade (2013-2014), Stephen Willats: Concerning Our Present Way of Living (2014) and most recently Intellectual Barbarians: The Kibbo Kift Kindred (2015-2016) and Imprint 93 (2016).
