"Hip hop supports the  refugees"

On Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September 2009, fourteen of the most popular hip hop groups of Athens will join their forces with the Greek Council for Refugees N.G.O. (GCR) against racism and xenophobia. The Greek Council for Refugees was funded in 1989 and is an exclusively philanthropic organisation. Its vision is for every refugee and asylum-seeker in Greece to have access to a life of dignity and its mission is to protect their rights and help them live without fear.
The two-day festival will take place in the Water Plaza of the Esplanade building, as part of the on-going Athens Biennale 2009 HEAVEN (Tram Stop: Delta Falirou, next to the Tae-Kwon-Do court). The participating artists are:
Friday 11/09: Salto Mortal, Pyrini Lailapa, Orthologistes, Nea Taksi Pragmaton, Phyrosun, Phase3 and guest Eisvoleas

Saturday 12/09: Univers, Nekriki Sighi, Freedom of Speech, Bitman & El Pap Chico, Flowjob, MC Yinka and guest Nikolas Razastarr

This concert has a dual purpose; on one hand,  to make young people more conscious of the necessity to protect and respect refugees through the dissemination of the message “life is a right, its protection is an obligation”, and on the other hand,  to financially support the Greek Council for Refugees and enable them to carry on their diverse work. The Greek Council for Refugees collects funds from European and national programmes, sponsorships, donations, members’ contributions and from special events.
Accurate information and the raising of awareness is crucial for wiping out social racism. Such actions and initiatives aim at making the world a better place and contribute  to the process of approaching and accepting our fellow-man,  no matter where he or she comes from.
The festival is co-produced by “Lagnes Prod-actions”  and the  Athens Biennale Non-Profit Organisation.

Filopappou Group - Natural Cultivation Workshop

Terminating the activities of the work Et in Arcadia Ego, Filopappou Group will sow clover, chinese cabbage, white beet, ruccola and a big variety of autumnal and spring flowers in an area of 100 sq.meters at the Faliro Park. The first sprouts will be visible in autumn, whereas more spectacular results will appear in approximately three years. This garden, a live sculpture, a land paradise, will be developed on an ongoing basis in the Faliro Park.

For the 2nd Athens Biennial Heaven the Filoppapou group teamed up with the Center for Natural  Farming (that was created by a group of volunteers in the summer of 1999 and it is hosted in a five and a half acre field in Klisohori in Edessa www.naturalfarming.eu) to coordinate the two workshops that took place in Flisvos park the 14th and 20th of June 2009. The spectators and passer-bies were called to participate in the making of seedballs: by wrapping seeds inside balls made of clay soil and sowing before the rainy seasons starts a variety of more than a hundred different kinds of seeds of fruiter and forest trees, vegetables, grains and green manure plants, the group hopes to resolve simultaneously the issue of erosion of the soil, to improve soil fertility, and to solve the problem of insect attacks and diseases. The key is the sowing of a large variety of plants living together in harmony.

The work Et in Arcadia Ego is consisted of a series of performances, workshops and discussions that negotiate the notion of Arcadia and will come to an end on the 12th of September with the symbolic gesture of the sowing of a 100 s.m. land in the Palaio Faliron park. Seeds that will be used include clover, alfalfa, Chinese cabbage, white beet, rocket, and a large variety of autumnal and spring flowers. The first plants will begin to sprout in the fall. More spectacular results will become evident, roughly in three years. This garden, a living sculpture an earthly paradise, will continue to develop at the Palaion Faliro Park.

Filopappou Group

http://filopapou.blogspot.com
The Filopappou Group is an open group of visual artists, without centralized organization or management and without official members. The coexistence and collaboration of people coming from various theoretical disciplines or spheres of action does not constitute a community, but rather functions on a network type structuring. The actions of the Filopappou network, on the one side aspire to  reactivate sites and on the other attempt to elevate collective types of artistic practice. For the work Et in arcadia ego the participants are Mady Albany, Antony Volanakis, George Giannakopoulos, Georgia Desylla, Mairy Zygouri, Nadja Kalara, Tina Kotsi, Nikos Papadopoulos, Tereza Papamihali, Ageliki Svoronou, Anna Tsouloufi and Kostas Christopoulos.
The work of the Filopappou Group “Et in Arcadia Ego”, produced by the 2nd Athens Biennial Heaven, is a “different” garden that invites the visitors to be part of it. An environment, a place for gathering of an immanent scenery, which hosts the negotiation of subject-related issues. Arcadia as the imaginary place of the frustration, which, among others, refers to an earthly and at the same time mythical paradise, to a garden of pleasures, to a contemplation on death and eternity but also to an inexplicable feeling of escapism. Our group research and study, as well as our stroll through Poussin's painting 'Et in Arcadia ego', drove us to consider topics such as natural and artificial paradise, pause and movement, the flourishing of people and artificial flora, death and eternity, rhizome and passage, and collectivity and community.

The performance will take place at the Faliro beach and park during the day and will last until the evening.   Educational Programs

In September the 2nd Athens Biennale 2009 HEAVEN organises and presents educational programmes for Primary, Junior High and High school. These programmes primarily aim at the development of critical thought by means of active participation in and discussion about contemporary artistic creation.

Teachers’ packs for Junior High and High Schools, especially designed for the preparation of the instructors, will be available prior to the class's visit to the exhibition, which provide with information on the works, explanatory texts, question and topics for discussion, photos of the works, and suggested activities. The purpose of the teachers’ packs is to enrich the students’ experience during their visit and to facilitate them in their understanding of the creative process, encouraging them to observe, to contemplate and to express their ideas on issues of contemporary art.

On the weekends 12-13, 19-20, 26-27 children of ages 6 to 10 can take part in a series of workshops in which they will create works of art along with participating Greek artists of the 2nd Athens Biennale 2009. The aim of these workshops is to familiarise children with artistic production through a joyful, creative activity. The participating artists are, among others, Anastasia Douka, Andreas Kasapis, Panayiotis Loukas, Angelo Plessas, Kostas Roussakis, and Yiannis Skourletis.

  Nikos Arvanitis - "Tonight Live"

The last fireworks of the work "Tonight Live" by Nikos Arvanitis, presented in the "Heaven_Live" exhibition curated by Dimitris Papaioannou & Zafos Xagoraris, will be launched on Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 September.

In regular intervals during the exhibition, a firework is launched to the sky from a point where the trajectory it follows is visible. The bright box acts like a notice board to the happening and refers to old retro signs of concert halls and cinemas.
