NEWSLETTER | DEC 03, 2018 6th Athens Biennale 2018 Curators: Stefanie Hessler / Poka-Yio / Kostis Stafylakis |
The 6th Athens Biennale is already on its final week, ending on Sunday, 9th of December. Titled ANTI, AB6 maps the contemporary political, social and cultural momentum while gazing to the future. Held at four exhibition venues in the center of Athens, the 6th Athens Biennale presents over 100 works by 100 international and Greek artists and collectives, highlighting the different aspects of ANTI. Walking through the artistic devices composing the exhibition, you will experience the enjoyment and discomfort embodied by opposition, and you will wonder about what might motivate reactionary fantasies and dwell on progressive pleasures. ANTI, during these last five weeks, has perceived by its visitors, both international and locals, as a direct, intense and controversial experience, a not-to-be-missed art exhibition. Counting down to the closure of AB6, we invite you to join us this week at this "messy" show and enjoy your visit to the fullest. Walk through the exhibition here. CINEMA NIGHTS Sit back at the large red armchairs of KINO, the pop up movie theater at Esperia Palace, relax and enjoy an alternative cinema experience. ANTI KINO is powered by LG. Katzelmacher, 1969 by Reiner Werner Fassbinder film, 85' Produced by Peer Raben Written by Rainer Werner Fassbinder Starring: Hanna Schygulla, Lilith Ungerer, Rudolf Waldemar Brem, Elga Sorbas, Rainer Werner Fassbinder Music by Peer Raben Cinematography by Dietrich Lohmann In collaboration with Goethe-Institut Athen Wed 5.12, 8pm > Esperia Palace, KINO, 1st floor Reiner Werner Fassbinder, Katzelmacher, 1969, Film still Rainer Werner Fassbinder was a West German filmmaker, actor, cinematographer and editor. He is widely regarded as a prominent figure and catalyst of the New German Cinema movement. But above all, he was a rebel whose life and art was marked by gross contradiction. At Fassbinder's second feature Katzelmacher, when Jorgos (Rainer Werner Fassbinder), a Greek immigrant laborer, moves to Munich, Germany, the lives of a financially and sexually frustrated group of friends are disrupted. Katzelmacher both depicts the personal alienation of the director himself and comments on the xenophobia in German society. *In German with English subtitles Dominion, 2018 by Chris Delforce documentary, 120' Fri 7.12, 5pm > Esperia Palace, KINO, 1st floor Chris Delforce, Dominion, 2018, Film still How art can be used as a tool for social awakening? Artistic activism is a way of thinking that generates actions which go beyond what is conventional to human society. It has played a major role in combating slavery, challenging polemic social tactics and politics, protecting human and non-human beings from exploitation, defending the environment, promoting gender equality, opposing speciesism, racism, sexism and so many other significant issues. The documentary explores the ethics and validity of our sovereignty over the planet and premieres in the 6th Athens Biennale. Activists with drones, hidden and handheld cameras have managed to unravel the barbarity of the animal exploitation industries. *In English with Greek subtitles A discussion will follow the screening. Participants: Yorgos Tsamis (artist educator, eco-activist) and Tina Petritsopoulou (fashion designer, translator, activist) from the non-profit initiative Ethos & Empathy. Liberation Day: A documentary musical, 2016 by Ugis Olte & Morten Traavik film, 100' Produced by Traavik.Info (Norway), VFS Films (Latvia) In coproduction with Mute Records (UK), Norsk Fjernsyn (Norway), Staragara (Slovenia) Supported by National Film Centre of Latvia, Culture Capital Foundation, Arts Council Norway, Slovenian Film Center Courtesy of the artists Fri 7.12, 8pm > Esperia Palace, KINO, 1st floor Ugis Olte & Morten Traavik, Liberation Day: A documentary musical, 2016, Film still Under delicate diplomacy by artist and filmmaker Morten Traavik, the government's negative reception of Laibach is appeased, and the Slovenian group has a green light to perform in North Korea. But this is not the end of Traavik's and Laibach's trouble. The plan for the concert undergoes various levels of censorship. What remains is a small number of songs accompanied by edited visual material approved by the Censorship Bureau. Laibach present amplified cover versions of songs from the 1965 musical film The Sound of Music. Western culture industry's rebuke of National Socialism, reprocessed after Laibach's playful appropriation of totalitarian aesthetics, reaches a quasi-unruffled audience during North Korea's Liberation Day celebrations. Who absorbed whom? Laibach's sincerity crosses North Korean politics and puzzles our perception of liberty and oppression. *In English and Korean with Greek subtitles MUSIC PERFORMANCE Dreams remained dreams, 2018 by Chara (Joy) Kolaitis as Anna Goula Inception, texts, song-covers, direction: Joy Kolaitis Piano: Kotsos Davidoff Performer: Anna Goula, Smaragda Sat 8.12, 10pm > Esperia Palace Joy Kolaitis performing as Anna Goula at the 6th Athens Biennale ANTI, 2018 photo Nysos Vasilopoulos In this work (performance) the visual artist Joy Kolaitis attempts, through her alter-ego Anna Goula, to bridge the past and the present of the turbo-folk and the bourgeois, the fringe and the elit. A music performance with the essence of tzatziki. Karagioz, the folk hero, personifies the Ordinary Guy Archetype, a bit naive, a bit of a rascal, poor and beaten-up, trying to survive against the odds by utilizing folk wisdom and tons of luck. In Aggelopoulos's shadow theater, a mash-up of politicians, media figures, superheroes, cinema characters and villains-from Donald Trump and Slavoj Zizek to Rocky and Marina Abramovic-competes in an imaginary arena. Place your bets on the winner. Where has my pension gone? Get your answer at the Civil Financial Regulation Office Weekdays, 2-8pm > TTT building, 2nd floor Civil Financial Regulation Office at the 6th Athens Biennale ANTI photo Nysos Vasilopoulos Every weekday, the agents of the Civil Financial Regulation Office (CFRO) at AB6 ANTI call the responsible regulators in Europe and ask them your questions. How is it possible that so little has changed since the last crisis? Finance is hiding behind its complexity. People in the financial sector only talk to each other. But we have questions. It's time we talk. What should we ask? Visit us at the 6th Athens Biennale, and leave your questions. You will soon get your answers. More info about the project by The Peng! Collective here. Get your limited edition of Crypto Certificate by Ed Fornieles Studios Find them at the TTT building, ground floor Get your limited edition of Ed Fornieles Studios Crypto Certificates produced specifically for the 6th Athens Biennale. The certificates are attempt to reimagine how the culture of funding in art might work differently. A hybrid between a financial product and an artist print, the certificate formalizes and distills art's most commercial and speculative qualities into one line of objects, in the hope that another space might open up elsewhere. The Certificate Program aims to allow artists some semblance of control of their financial destiny, with a product that can exist outside or beside the common economy of the art market. In an article comparing the use of crypto currency and art, the artist Hito Steyerl asks the question "If art is an alternative currency, could these structures be repossessed to work differently?" The Crypto Certificate aims to do exactly that. More info here. DON'T FORGET THE CATALOGUE The catalogue of the 6th Athens Biennale ANTI is conceived as both a companion to the exhibition and a reader that reflects on the Biennale's various themes. Alongside the presentation of participating artists and exhibited works, it includes a series of texts that explore particular thematic strands, leading to multiple questions and sometimes divergent conclusions. The texts are not selected and organized with the purpose of erecting an impenetrable political position, but with the aspiration of proposing an investigative framework for today's oppositional politics and their normalization within various ideological, social, cultural, and technological fields.
